Hello, my name is Heather Mahlberg, I have a Bachelors in Elementary Education and Special Education from the Dakota State University.  I am currently working on a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Learning from Concordia University.  I am currently finished my ninth year of teaching in the Omaha Public School District as a special education teacher.

The website is designed to give strategies to help educators improve instruction for English Language Learners and Special Education Students.

First strategy is differentiated instruction which is personalize instruction for students.  Step one, Pre-assessing students prior knowledge of the State Standard being taught.  Step two, plan your content and process of teaching.  Finally assess the the content and evaluate students growth.  The flowchart on the right side is a great example of differentiation instruction process.

Another benefit for English Language Learners and Special Education Students is the behavior-learning instruction which focuses on mastery of skills and the recalling of information.  The instruction is teacher directed learning environment strategies such as demonstrations, modeling, lecture, discussion, cooperative learning, choral reading, creating lists, and vocabulary building.

Last strategy I want to emphasize is cognitive instruction in which students go deeper into the content with teacher assistance.  It uses brainstorming, concept mapping, role playing, KWL, Kagan structures, higher-order questioning, and problem solving.

These strategies really help English Language Learners and Special Education Students experience learning in a variety of ways while enhancing their understanding of what is being taught.  Teachers need to make sure to evaluate students understanding and mastery along the way.  When teachers take the initiative to build relationships with their students then they are more willing to tackle difficult tasks.
